Let’s imagine a scenario where two people – we’ll call them Ben and Ella – are working on a group project together, and they both make a mistake during a presentation. They are both aware of the mistake, but their responses differ based on their self-esteem and self-worth.

I grew up in a house with a cellar. It was a dark, windowless room where my dad kept his collection of tools and a workbench, while my mum stored the garden’s bounty in jars of preserves and jams. Every now and then, I was sent down to fetch something for the next meal—maybe some pickles or a jar of honey. During the day, this wasn’t an issue.

Trauma is often associated with catastrophic events—violent assaults, natural disasters, or accidents—but it’s not always that simple. Many people experience trauma in more subtle, yet equally damaging ways.

Anxiety is a common emotional response that everyone experiences from time to time. However, when it becomes overwhelming or persistent, it can interfere with daily life.

How often do you hear an internal voice telling you “You’re stupid and lazy,” “Look at how fat you’re getting!” or “If you don’t do this perfectly, everyone will see you’re a fraud”? We all have an inner critic. It’s nearly impossible to grow up in our society without developing this critical voice, which is shaped by parents, teachers, peers, the media, and our own conclusions.
